Red Fort

The Red Fort of Agra, a significant 16th-century Mughal structure, is located close to the Taj Mahal's gardens. This stronghold of red sandstone encloses the imperial city of the Mughal emperors within its 2.5 km-long enclosure walls. This fort's ominous exterior belies an idyllic interior. Among the magnificent structures are the Moti Masjid, a mosque made of white marble that resembles a flawless pearl; Diwan-E-Am, Diwan-E-Khaas; the Musamman Burj, the site of the 1666 death of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan; Jahangir's Palace; Khaas Mahal; and Sheesh Mahal. Agra Fort is one of the few UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India and a superb example of Mughal architecture.

Agra Fort

The construction of the Agra fort was started around 1565, when the initial structures were built by the Mughal Emperor Akbar, and subsequently taken over by his grandson Shah Jahan, who added most of the marble creations to the fort. The fort has a long, almost straight wall facing the river and is crescent-shaped, with a flattened east face. Red sandstone ramparts with double castellations encircling it are broken up at regular intervals by bastions. The outer wall is surrounded by a 10 m deep and 9 m wide moat. A striking inner wall that rises to a height of 22 meters gives the impression of an unbeatable defensive structure. The river that ran alongside the fort in those days dictated the layout of the structure. The walls span outward toward the city, with the main axis running parallel to the river.

At 15:30

Visit the Zardozi art exhibit, which features historical works created by Harem women during the reign of the Mughal emperor

16:30 hrs: Savor the Itmad ud Daulah Tour

Known as the Baby Taj, Mizra Ghiyas Beg's magnificent tomb is a must-see. This Persian nobleman served as Emperor Jehangir's wazir, or chief minister, and was the grandfather of Mumtaz Mahal. His daughter Nur Jahan, who wed Jehangir, constructed the tomb between 1622 and 1628, following the design of the one she had constructed for Jehangir in the vicinity of Lahore, Pakistan. Itmad-ud-Daula holds a unique position in the annals of both architecture and history. This is specifically due to the fact that Itmad ud Daula is the first tomb in India built completely of marble. This is actually a mausoleum dedicated to Mir Ghiyas Beg, a minister in Shah Jahan's court, with a view of the Yamuna River.

17:30: Take the expressway back to Delhi.
